How To Grow Your Email List with Free Opt-Ins

You will hear it a thousand times so it won’t hurt to hear it again. But it’s all very well knowing you have to grow your list but how do you actually grow your email list?

One of the most converting ways is to offer free opt-ins. Why? If I stopped strangers in the street and asked them to give me their email address, most would look blankly at me and walk off.  Some might stop and ask why. The rare few would say, of course, a complete stranger here is my email address. This is what most people are doing when they have a little subscription box on their sidebar asking people to sign up t the newsletter.

Now if I stood in a very busy well known and loved clothes shop and ask the shoppers in the shop if they wanted 20% off in return for giving me their email address, how many more people would say yes? Lots! That is what giving free opt-in does.

The difference is that in the second example I was giving targetted shoppers something they really wanted so they are more likely to say yes.

The same is with your blog.  You have got them to your post via advertising, social media, SEO or recommendations etc don’t lose them now. Offer them something they want for free. They might not know they want your freebie but show them you’re the bee’s knees at x and y and they will return and buy z.

Now you know the why let’s work on the how bit.

The trick is figuring out what to offer as you free opt-in.

If you’re a business of any sort it’s a lot easier as you can offer a discount or a free item. But what if you haven’t got a product to sell yet or your blog and which isn’t going down the ebook/course/pdf for sale route? There are still lots of things you can offer. Might take a bit of keyboard bashing or Canva creating but look at the suggestions below and see how you can fit them in with your niche.

  • Cheat sheet
  • Swipe files
  • Mini ecourse
  • Webinar
  • Transcript
  • Step by step tutorial
  • Resource list
  • Checklist
  • Worksheet
  • Mini ebook
  • Printable quote/poster
  • Mini-challenge

If you are really stuck the simplest one to start off with is a pdf version of the blog post they just read. It’s probably also the least beneficial but that depends on your niche. But what if the pdf also included a checklist of things the reader can check off or worksheet on how to do something? That’s immediately more beneficial, isn’t it?

Start by looking at your analytics and see which posts get the most traffic. Create a free opt-in and add it to your top 5 or 10 posts. Don’t forget to take a note of numbers like subscribers and page views etc before you offer the opt-in. That what you have something to measure against to see how you free opt-in is working.
